Research Overview
Melanotan II (MT-II) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analog of ?-MSH developed at the University of Arizona. Unlike the linear Melanotan 1, MT-II is a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist, binding to MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R. This broader receptor profile gives it a wider range of research applications across pigmentation, sexual function, appetite, and energy homeostasis.
Mechanism of Action
MT-II activates multiple melanocortin receptors: MC1R (melanogenesis/pigmentation), MC3R (energy homeostasis and inflammation), MC4R (appetite regulation and sexual function), and MC5R (exocrine gland function). The cyclic structure provides enhanced stability and receptor binding. MC4R activation in the hypothalamus triggers erectile and sexual arousal pathways, while MC1R activation stimulates melanocyte eumelanin production.
Experimental Applications
Studied in melanocortin receptor selectivity profiling, melanogenesis pathway research, MC4R-mediated appetite and feeding behavior studies, sexual function and erectile physiology models, energy balance research, and inflammatory pathway modulation via MC3R.
